OPPOSED THE “MARRIAGE PROTECTION AMENDMENT”

February, 2005

Sen. Wayne Allard (R-Colo.) has introduced the "Marriage Protection Amendment," S.J.RES.1, which attempts to amend the United States Constitution to read as follows:

"Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman. Neither this Constitution, nor the constitution of any State, shall be construed to require that marriage or the legal incidents thereof be conferred upon any union other than the union between a man and a woman."

Fla. Senator Mel Martinez is co-sponsoring this bill along with 23 others.

Please help fight this bill by sending letters to our Fla. senators (samples below with the senators' email addresses) and by calling to express your outrage at this proposed amendment.

Dear Sen. Martinez,

Shame on you for co-sponsoring the "Marriage Protection Amendment." This
bill is a blatant attempt to enforce your right-wing viewpoint on the rest
of society. It seeks to deny lesbians and gays the same rights afforded to
straight couples (and denies single people benefits that ALL people should
have).

By supporting this bill, you violate your party's own conservative
principles, which stress the importance of small government-- the importance
of individuals' rights and privacy. What is more individual and private than
who we fall in love with?

Furthermore, this proposed amendment denies equal protection of the law to
people who are more pro-family than most heterosexuals. We demand an
immediate end to these attacks on the lesbian and gay community.

Sincerely,
Your Name
City, State

Dear Sen. Nelson,

We trust will work to defeat S.J. Res. 1, the "Marriage Protection
Amendment."

This bill is a blatant attempt to enforce a right-wing viewpoint on the rest
of society. It denies lesbians and gays the same rights afforded to straight
couples (and denies single people benefits that ALL people should have). The
proposed amendment, which is being supported by Sen. Martinez, seeks to
punish people who are more pro-family than most heterosexuals.

We hope you will do everything in your power to stop these attacks on the
lesbian and gay community.

Sincerely,
Your Name
City, State
