Abortion Rights in Danger

June 26, 2002

* EVENT REPORT :

On June 26, Key West NOW kicked off a new, longterm education action to protect Roe v. Wade: a program offered to other community organizations screening the Feminist Majority Foundation's new video "We Won't Go Back." The first group to invite NOW members to present the program was the Lambda Democrats of Key West.

Narrated by Carrie Fisher, the video traces the history of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision ruling that abortion was a matter of privacy rights, to be decided by a women and her medical doctor. It also warns that the historic decision, handed down Jan. 22, 1973, is in danger of being overturned, sending women in the United States back into the nightmare of illegal, back alley abortions.

Action coordinator Christy Sweet is contacting local groups to offer the video program and to set up dates for its presentation. She expects an upswing of interest when the Key West 2002-03 tourist season begins in October and November. Members Kathy Timberlake, who provided the video, and Bridget Lynch are also working on the action.

The NOW chapter first screen the video continuously for four hours at the Peace in the Park action sponsored by dozens of local organizations on International Women's Day, March 8, 2002. Woody Woodburn participated in that action with Timberlake and other members; Sweet served on the coordinating committee.
