The Sasha McInnes, A Feminist Artist's Collection dedicated to Mary Von Craig McInnes.
Brought to Florida at Florida Tech for all Florida NOW members and feminists to be able to use.
The Indian River National Organization for Women and Florida Tech are delighted to announce the acquisition of the The Sasha McInnes, A Feminist Artist's Collection. This distinguished collection of approximately 1578 volumes, many rare and out-of-print, provides unique resources of value to women's studies academic programs everywhere; addresses interests of clinicians, scholars, women and artists in the local community; and supports the Florida Tech School of Psychology curriculum and research programs.
Sasha McInnes is a prominent Canadian artist/tapestry weaver who for 30 years collected an extensive core women's studies library germane to her active support of women's causes. Sasha helped open the first battered women's shelter in Ontario and a treatment centre, donating her art in order to raise funds. She has had many exhibitions of her feminist art and taught workshops regarding women and art.
Her book collection addresses women's issues from a number of perspectives, including:
Feminism, cultural sensitivity to women, and the history of the women's
movement with rare works from independent women's presses. Books written by
men, about men and the "men's movement."
Mental well-being, including self-help, self esteem, feminist therapy,
sexuality, aging, women's health, women and violence, feminist therapy,
date rape, eating disorders, and sexual abuse.
The arts and culture, including art/media, women and music/ composing,
writers, performers, theatre, visual arts, and theory and history of art
and sculpture.
Celtic cultures, First Nations people including aboriginals, and native
people from many cultures.
Politics, social change, and historical works on witchcraft.
The environment, mythology, spirituality, and eco-feminism.
Ethical issues, biography, autobiography, fiction and poetry.
The The Sasha McInnes, A Feminist Artist's Collection will be highly valued by the faculty and students of the Florida Tech School of Psychology. The curriculum, research, and training offered by the School develops clinicians and research professionals with specialties in childhood sexual abuse, at-risk female youth, gender issues, domestic violence/marriage therapy, gender-sensitive psychotherapy, eating disorders, aging, memory disorders, and cross-cultural studies. Faculty research programs address these areas.
Sasha McInnes offered her collection to Florida Tech in order to honor the memory of her mother, Mary Von Craig McInnes. With proceeds from the sale of her collection, Sasha carried her mother's ashes back to Peru and spread them over the Ballestas Islands. She also will buy a memorial picnic table in Vancouver Park overlooking the ocean.
A National Endowment for the Humanities grant brought three experts (Susan Gegenhuber, Women's Studies Book Appraiser; Susan Tucker, Women's Studies Librarian, and Kathleen Jones, Women's Studies Scholar) to campus to view the collection and appraise its value to the scholarly community and the public and let us know what a treasure we have.
Estimated original cost: $16,000 US. Cost to buy collection: $3500 plus approximately $1495 for packing and shipping from Canada. Total $4995.
