Feb 3 Cathy Stanton will be speaking on Women in Prison at S. Brevard AAUW meeting which meets monthly, Cocoa Library.

Feb. 27 - Regular Meeting: Developing strategies for upcoming legislative sessions and reading from great women to herald in Women's Herstory Month
March 6 - Legislative session opens in Tallahassee
March 8 - International Women's Day - Write a letter to the editor!!
March 10 - Women to Women Conference on Crucial Women's Issues: Cocoa Beach, Holiday Inn; 9am -3pm several organizations (including the Central Brevard AAUW, Coalition for Women's and Children Issues, Brevard County Commission on the Status of Women) will host a conference on crucial women's issues. March 29, 2001 Day of Remembrance The Clothesline Ribbon Project, Commemoration on Community and Campus Crimes of Sexual Violence, Come hang a ribbon on the line and write the name, details, or a message so all can remember that special person, either for yourself or someone you know who has experienced these crimes. 10 AM-4PM, Florida Tech, SUB Plaza in front of Denius Student Center, 150 W. April 6 - Sunflower: The Life and Loves of Elizabeth Cady Stanton at Riverside Theater, Vero Beach presents the first Florida performance of Elizabeth Perry's nationally renowned portrayal of women's rights crusader

Sunflower: The Life and Loves of Elizabeth Cady Stanton The play Sunflower was presented at the Riverside Theatre Many NOW members attended this remarkable one woman show, written and acted by Elizabeth Perry. Cathy Stanton, great great granddaughter of Mrs. Stanton (and IR NOW member) was on hand in costume to introduce the show, and to show some of her memorabilia to the attendees. Member Mary Atkins made many bookmarks with Stanton's quotations on them, and IR NOW's name and address on the reverse sides. They were handed out to audience members as well. It was a wonderful evening by all reports. Indian River NOW cosponsored the events, teaming with many community groups. IR NOW provided two tickets for students and we were very pleased that NOW members Ginny Johnson brought her young daughter and took advantage of a ticket. Ellen DiBenedetto also brought her daughter. The audience was filled with about 250 people of all ages. The Friendly gathering was a wonderful success!
April 22nd - National Emergency March for Women's Lives in Washington, DC. March to the Capitol Steps and show your support for reproductive freedom! Meet at Senate Park on Sunday at 11am - March at noon - Rally at the Capitol (west steps) 1pm.

May 22nd - Regular Meeting Cathy Stanton will present a report on Women in Prison and show us how we can help.
June - Gay Pride month
June 16th - Luncheon featuring abortion rights activist and former clinic owner Patricia Baird-Windle. She will be presenting her new book Targets of Hatred: Anti-Abortion Terrorism and speaking about her experiences as the owner of Aware Woman Center for Choice in Melbourne.
June 26th - Regular Meeting - 7 to 9pm at the "UU House" behind the Unitarian Universalist Church on 43rd Ave. in Vero Beach - In celebration of Gay Pride Month, we will be holding a joint meeting with the local PFLAG chapter (Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays). Ginna Hamner will present on the intersections between feminism and the gay rights movement and the intersection between sexism and homophobia.
June 29 - July 1: National NOW Conference in Philadelphia. To be a delegate, one must be a member in good standing from at least March 31 through July. Former Florida NOW President Toni Van Pelt will be running for a national NOW office and we want to support her with a large delegation!! July 23rd - 7pm; Patricia Baird-Windle will speak and sign books at the Eau Gallie Library.
July 24th - Regular meeting, 7-9pm at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship on 43rd Avenue in Vero Beach. Where do you stand on pornography? Come discuss an issue that often divides the women's movement. Bring plenty of opinions, as well as an open mind!
August 18th - NOW table at the Indian River Democrat's Family Day in Sebastian from 10am to 4pm. Call Gloria or Elsie to volunteer!
August 25th - In lieu of the regular meeting for August, Saturday, August 25th will feature a luncheon and a speaker - local NOW member and author E. Lynne Wright. Ms. Wright will be signing copies of her book and speaking about some of the dynamic Florida women who shaped the history of our state. Wright is the author of a new book that gives the biographies of several Florida women. It is titled "More Than Petticoats: Remarkable Florida Women" and is available at most book outlets. August 26th - Women's Equality Day! IR NOW member Cathy Stanton will be speaking in Boca Raton - NOW of Southern Palm Beach County is sponsoring an event celebrating the history of the women's movement on Women's Equality Day - Sunday, August 26th. Indian River NOW member Cathy Stanton, the great great granddaughter of tireless suffragette Elizabeth Cady Stanton, will be speaking along with prestigious activists like Janet Reno. Following the presentations, the film "Dreams of Reality"f - the story of Seneca Falls and the struggle for suffrage - will be shown. They're asking people to dress in white dresses with purple sashes, keeping with a historical tradition. It starts at 2 p.m., at the UU Fellowship of Boca Raton, at 2601 St. Andrews Blvd, 1/4 mi. north of Glades Rd. Refreshments will be served, and there is a $5 suggested" donation...
August 28th - PFLAG candlelight vigil to remember the victims of hate crimes - 7 pm - Unitarian Universalist Fellowship at 355 43rd Avenue in Vero Beach.
September 5th - Redistricting hearing - 9am Executive Center (Old Court House) on 14th Avenue in Vero Beach. Come discuss how the new electoral districts will be drawn and participate in the process. (Should last 4 hours.)
September 24th - 25th - Celebrate Women's Equality in Washington, DC with many prominent feminist speakers! Featured speakers will include Feminist Majority founder Eleanor Smeal, feminist activist and
lawmaker Patricia Schroeder, and Lind Chavez-Thompson. For more information, visit the following websites:

September 25th -Tuesday - Monthly Meeting 7 to 9pm; Indian River NOW will celebrate "Love Your Body Day" along with NOW chapters across the nation in order to help women (and men) confront and improve their body image. This year, IR NOW will focus on living with disabilities. Mary Atkins had uncovered a fantastic speaker for us: Dr. Virginia Savage has a PhD in sports psychology and has lived with disabilities in her own life. After surviving polio as a child, Dr. Savage went on to climb mountains - literally - until an accident left her with shattered knees. She has gone on to accomplish amazing things in her life, and will give us all a fresh look at living with disabilities. Not a program designed merely for those with disabilities, this meeting will be inspirational and eye-opening for everyone! Be sure to save the date: Tuesday, September, 25th; 7 to 9pm in Indian River County. Vero Beach Police Station Training Room 1055 20th Street (eastbound only, between 11th Ave. and 10 Ave.)

October - Domestic Violence Awareness Month:
October 13th - Indian River Coalition on Domestic Violence Family Fun Day in Riverside Park, Vero Beach. 10am-2pm. Call Gloria Wood to schedule a time to volunteer at the NOW table! Contact Mary Atkins for more information on domestic violence ribbons which are available for a $1 donation.
October 19th - Domestic Violence Workshop at the Women's Center in Melbourne. See page 2 for details. A Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention Workshop will feature several speakers and will cover a wide range of topics. The registration fee of $65 includes six credit hours and a light lunch. The workshop has been approved by the Florida State Board of Nursing for six credit hours of continuing education for nurses. The program is being sponsored by the Women's Center and Safe Harbor of Melbourne.

November 27th - Regular monthly meeting, 7 - 9pm. Legislative update and presentation on modern women in music: the feminist, the not, and the mixed messages.
January 8th - 13th - The Vagina Monologues - Even Ensler's dynamic feminist play! In The Vagina Monologues, Eve Ensler has given voice to a chorus of lusty, outrageous, poignant, brave, highly original
and thoroughly human stories. This celebrated and provocative play has become an international phenomenon and has spawned V-Day, a worldwide movement to combat violence against women.
